In this period of the year it is so beautiful to listen to the chirping of the birds in our garden, in the mountains, near the lake or just in nature. They don’t seem to get tired until the evening twilight sets in. I’ve been trying to register the birds’ orchestra in our garden while we were enjoying the hot evening.

In questo periodo dell’anno è bellissimo poter ascoltare il cinguettio degli uccelli nel nostro giardino, in montagna, vicino ad un laghetto, ossia in natura. Non sembrano di stancarsi fino all’imbrunire. Ho cercato di registrare l’orchestra degli uccelli nel nostro giardino mentre che stavamo godendo una piacevole serata.

In dieser Jahreszeit ist es so wunderschön dem Vogelgezwitscher zuzuhören, wenn wir in unserem Garten sitzen oder in den Bergen, am See oder einfach in der Natur sind. Die Vögel scheinen nicht Müde zu werden bis die Dämmerung einsetzt. Ich habe versucht das Gezwitscher, das mir wie ein Orchester vorkommt, aufzunehmen während wir den Abend genossen und hier in meiner Power Point Präsentation einzufügen.

The terrific book “BIRDY” by William Wharton induced me to do this and it also makes me observe the black birds and their nests again much closer in the breeding season, like, especially, Birdy has done it. The story of BIRDY or of two boys, Al and Birdy, their childhood, their surrounding, Birdy’s passion and their families got under my skin like the intensive birdsongs!

Questo libro fantastico “BIRDY” (UCCELLO) di William Wharton mi ha fatto osservare di nuovo meglio i merli, i loro nidi e le loro covate, come Birdy ha fatto. La storia di Birdy è intorno a due ragazzi, Al e Birdy, le loro gioventù, il loro ambiente, la passione di Birdy e le loro famiglie e il tutto mi è andato sotto la pelle come un canto intenso degli uccelli.

Das unglaubliche Buch Birdy von William Wharton hat mich veranlasst dies zu tun und es bringt mich auch dazu unsere Amseln in der Brutzeit beim Nestbauen besser zu beobachten, so wie es vor allem Birdy gemacht hat. Die Geschichte von BIRDY oder den zwei Jungs, ihrer Jugend, deren Umgebung und Birdys Leidenschaft für Vögel ist mir unter die Haut gegangen, wie der intensive Vogelgesang!

Wunderbare Doku zu den Vögeln

The American writer, William Wharton, published the book in 1978 when he was over 50 and had survived D-day and the long campaign across France and the Low Countries, despite the fact that he had been very badly wounded physically as well as in his soul in the Battle of the Bulge.

Il libro “Birdy” dello scrittore americano, Wiliam Wharton, è stato pubblicato nel 1978 quando egli aveva già oltre 50 anni e sopravissuto il D-Day come pure la lunga marcia attraverso la Francia e i Paesi Bassi, malgrado il fatto che era stato gravemente ferito fisicamente tanto quanto nella sua anima durante la battaglia di Bulge “Battle of the Bulge”.

Der amerikanische Schriftsteller, William Wharton veröffentlichte dieses Buch 1978, als er bereits über 50 war. Er hatte den D-Day der lange Marsch durch Frankreich und den Niederlanden überlebt, obwohl er in der Schlacht „of the Bulge“, sowohl physisch wie auch psychisch,schwer verletzt wurde.

Al and Birdy have been friends for a very long time. Al, a strong and aggressive boy and Birdy a shy one, who is passionate or obsessed with birds and more precisely at first with pigeons and later with canaries; he loved to observe them very closely and to have his dreams, he caught and taught them, spoke to them and wanted to be a bird himself and fly from the squalor he lived in. This is maybe also why he made a bird suit with soft feathers and it’s these feelings he shared with Al, who hasn’t mocked him. Birdy’s language is poetic and dreamlike and I have never ever read such a touching description of bird breeding. Al, on the other hand, is more crude and direct and the war provoked a fear within him he dad never thought possible.

Al e Birdy sono stati amici per tanti, tanti anni. Al, un ragazzo forte e aggressivo mentre che Birdy è timido e ha una grande passione, magari è ossessionato degli uccelli e più precisamente di piccioni, da prima e poi canarini. Lui amava osservarli da molto vicino e di sognare, ha catturato gli uccelli e li ha insegnati e ha parlato a loro e voleva tanto essere un uccello anche lui alfine di volare via dalla miseria in cui viveva. Per questo motivo ha pure fatto un vestito da uccello con delle piume finissime. Tutti i suoi sentimenti ha diviso con Al che non l’ha deriso. La lingua di Birdy è poetica e simile di un sogno e devo ammettere che non ho mai letto un libro che ha descritto così minuziosamente e in modo toccante il periodo dell’annidamento. Al, d’altro canto è più diretto e la guerra ha provocato in lui una paura che non avrebbe mai creduto possibile.

Al und Birdy sind seit langer, langer Zeit Freunde. Al ist der starke aggressive Knabe und Birdy der scheue, der leidenschaftlich ist was Vögel anbelangt oder vielleicht sogar besessen, zuerst von Tauben und dann mit Kanarienvögeln. Er liebte es sie zu beobachten und zu träumen, er fing sie ein, trainierte sie, sprach mit ihnen und wollte selbst ein Vogel werden und von all dem Elend in dem er lebte davonfliegen. Das war wahrscheinlich der Grund, warum er aus weichen Federn ein Vogelkleid machte. All seine Gefühle teilte er mit Al, der ihn nie verspottete. Birdy’s Sprache ist poetisch, traumähnlich und ich habe noch nie ein solch ergreifendes Buch über die Brutzeit von Vögeln gelesen. Al ist hingegen ungehobelter und direkter und der Krieg hat in ihm eine solche Angst hervorgerufen, die er nie für möglich gehalten hätte.

When Al visits Birdy in the military psychiatric clinic Birdy is only crouching on the floor and has to be fed like a fledgling. At first he doesn’t respond to Al until the latter starts to talk about canaries. Al sometimes asks himself of whether it would be better to let Birdy live in the world he is now than in our crazy world.

Quando Al visita il suo amico nella clinica militare psichiatrica Birdy è accoccolato in mezzo alla camera e deve essere nutrito come un uccello. All’inizio non risponde ad Al, finché egli comincia a parlare di canarini. Al si chiede talvolta, se non fosse meglio lasciare Birdy nel suo mondo che riportarlo nel nostro mondo da pazi!

Als Al Birdy im Militärspital, in der Abteilung für Psychiatrie besucht, hockt Birdy am Boden und muss, wie ein junger Vogel, gefüttert werden. Zuerst antwortet er nicht auf die Fragen von Al bis dieser anfängt, von den Kanarienvögel zu sprechen. Trotzdem frägt sich Al manchmal, ob es wohl besser wäre Birdy in seiner Welt zu belassen.

Diese Woche hat sich eine flügge gewordene Amsel in unser Haus verirrt. Wir haben sie sachte mit dem Fäumer gefangen und dann in Sicherheit gebracht, so dass sie bei gegebener Zeit fortfliegen kann, wie wir! A fledgling blackbird lost its way in our house, but we managed to softly catch it with a fischernet and could transport it into our save garden so that it can fly away, like we, when the time is appropriate! Questa settimana un picolo merlo, perdendo la propria strada,è venuto in casa nostra e con molta delicatezza abbiamo potuto prenderlo e metterlo al sicuro nel nostro giardino di modo che potrà volare via, come noi, quando il tempo giusto arriva!
