MEINE ZUSAMMENFASSUNG/MY SUMMARY

In dieses sehr eindrückliche Buch, dessen Geschichte sich auf drei Kontinenten abspielt, habe ich mich auf den auf den ersten Blick oder auf der ersten Seite verliebt. Gleich am Anfang beschreibt die Schriftstellerin die Düfte in amerikanischen Städten. In Princeton, zum Beispiel, riecht es nach gar nichts und das, obwohl es Grün ist und die Strassen sauber sind und es viele überteuerte Geschäfte gibt. Dieses Geruchlose ist anscheinend ganz im Gegensatz zu anderen amerikanischen Städten, wo es entweder modrig nach Geschichte riecht, nach Verwahrlosung, nach Salzlake oder nach sonnenwarmem Abfall.

With this very impressive book, whose story is set on three continents, I’ve fallen in love at first glance or on the first page. Right at the beginning the writer describes the perfumes in American cities. In Princeton, for example, it doesn’t taste of anything, despite the fact that it’s green and the streets are clean and there are many excessively expensive shops. This tastelessness seems to be quite in opposition to other American cities, where it smells either stale of history or squalidness, of brine or of garbage exposed to sun.

Es geht Chimamanda , dieser jungen Nigerianerin, die teils in den Vereinigten Staaten lebt und teils in Nigeria um die postkoloniale Geschichte, die Identität, sowie die Rassen-und Klassenfrage in Amerika. Sie macht uns Lesern klar, dass es eine Art Akzeptanzskala gibt. Zu oberst sind weisse, vor allem angelsächsische Protestanten, dann kommen die Mischlinge und zu unterst sind die Schwarzen.

Die Hauptperson im Buch heisst Ifemelu und sie ist die Tochter einer Mittelstandsfamilie, die die Miete für das Haus nicht mehr bezahlen kann, weil der Vater keine Stelle mehr findet. Er wurde gefeuert, weil er sich weigerte seine neue Chefin Mummy zu nennen. Sie und ihre grosse Liebe Obinze wollen studieren, aber weil es im vom Militär regierten Land immer wieder zu Streiks kommt wird das Studium unmöglich gemacht und sie schafft es auch mit Hilfe ihrer Tante Uju in Amerika ein Stipendium und Studienplatz zu bekommen. Der Plan ist, dass auch Obnize später nach Amerika kommt, aber leider landet er ohne Pass in London und es ergeht im schlecht.Er wird am Tage seiner Hochzeit mit einer Europäerin entdeckt, da sein Visum abgelaufen ist!

The book of Chimamanda, this young Nigerian, who partly lives in the United States and partly in Nigeria, is about postcolonial history, identity as well as about racial and social level questions in that country. She makes us the readers aware that there is a kind of acceptance scale. The white people, especially the Anglo-Saxon protestants are on top and then there are those of mixed origins and at the bottom are the black people.

The main character in this book is Ifemelu and she is the daughter of a middle-class family, which does not succeed anymore in paying for the rent of the house they live in, because her father doesn’t find a job anymore. He was fired because he refused to call his new boss MUMMY. Ifemelu and Obinze, her big love, want to study, but because of frequent strikes in this by the military governed country, it becomes quite impossible to study and she manages, with the help also of her aunt Uju, to get a scholarship and a university place in the United States.

The plan is that Obinze will follow her, but unfortunately he finishes, without any passport, in London where life is prety hard for him. He is discovered by the authorities on the day of his wedding with an European woman!

Ifemelu schreibt in den USA einen anonymen Lifestyle -Blog zu ein paar Beobachtungen über schwarze Amerikaner (früher Neger) von einer nicht-amerikanischen Schwarzen. Dank dieses Blogs bekommt sie Spenden und kann sich sogar eine Eigentumswohnung leisten.

Auf einem Flug sass ein Mann aus Ohio neben ihr und sagte :“ Haben Sie schon mal über Adoption geschrieben? Niemand in diesem Land will schwarze Babys, und ich meine keine Mischlingskinder, sondern schwarze. Nicht einmal schwarze Familien wollen schwarze Babys.“

Ifemelu writes a anonymous live-style-blog in the United States about her observations concerning black Americans (nigger in the past) from a not American black woman. Thanks to this blog she receives offers and can even afford a condominium.

On a flight she is sitting next to a man from Ohio who says:“ Have you already written about adoption? Nobody in this country wants black babies and I don’t mean children of mixed origins, but of back ones. Not even black families want black children.“

In Amerika gibt es vieles, was Ifemelu sich total anders vorgestellt hat, wie zum Beispiel die Autos oder Verkehrsschilder, die total glanzlos sind, oder dass man auf Partys nicht tanzt, sondern herumsteht und trinkt. In den Colleges, z.B. werden die Aufgaben per E-Mail verschickt und Partizipation hat einen sehr hohen Stellenwert, so dass alle sprechen und sprechen, ohne Informationen zu geben. Ifemelu muss sich daran gewöhnen, dass ein Amerikaner, der jemand zu sich nach Hause einlädt dem Besucher das ganze Haus zeigt und dass man schmutzige Wäsche nicht jeden Tag auswäscht, sondern einfach in die Maschine tut und dass, vor allem ,die Haare glatt sein müssen, wie bei der First Lady noch heute und was für Schmerzen dafür ausgehalten werden müssen. Ifemelu wird es beim Einkaufen schwindlig, wenn sie nun auf einmal hundert verschieden Cornfakesschachteln gegenüber steht.

There are many things in America that Ifemelu imagined completely different such as the cars and number plates, which are completely lusterless or that at parties you don’t dance but you drink and stand around. In the colleges, for example, the homework is sent to the students by e-mail and participation is of great significance so that everybody speaks without communicating anything! Ifemelu has to get used that an American, who invites you to his home shows you his whole house and that dirty laundry is not being washed on a daily basis but is just thrown into the machine and that, above all, your hair has to be straight as the first Lady does it still today and great pain has to be suffered because o this procedure. Ifemelu gets dizzy when she faces hundreds of different cornflakes boxes from which to choose when doing her shopping.

Für mich war es ein grosses Vergnügen dieses Buch zu lesen und empfehle es gerne weiter.

For me it was a great pleasure to read this book and I would like to recomend it to you.

Wie wir wissen ist Nigeria derzeit in aller Munde wegen den circa 300 Mädchen, die von der Islamistengruppe Boko Haram entführt wurden.

In der NZZ habe ich einen sehr spannenden Artikel gelesen, in welchem steht, dass viele Nigerianer nun wieder in ihr Heimatland zurückkehren, weil die Wirtschaft, vor allem die Landwirtschaft floriert, dass aber die alte Krankheit, die Korruption ein riesiges Problem ist. Die Elite in Nigeria schwimmt im Geld und ist dekadent und faul und die Politiker halten sich die höchsten Saläre auf dem Kontinent. Andererseits leben 80% der Bevölkerung mit weniger als 2 Dollar pro Tag auskommen. Die Show must go on!

Übrigens BOKO HARAM heisst zu Deutsch: westliche Bildung ist Sünde.”

As we know everybody speaks of Nigeria because of the 300 girls kidnapped by the Islamist Boko Haram group. I’ve however also read a very interesting article in the NZZ that many Nigerians are returning back to their country because the economy, especially agriculture, is doing very well. Unfortunately the old illness, corruption is an enormous problem.The social elite in Nigeria is full of money but decadent and lazy and the politicians maintain the highest salaries on the continent.  On the other hand live 80% of the people  on less than 2 dollars a day .The show must go on!

By the way BOKO HARAM means in English: western education is a sin.”.
