Mein Mann und ich sind kürzlich nach Zürich gefahren, weil ich den berühmten Spuren von James Joyce und vielen weiteren weltweitbekannten Schriftstellern, Musikern, Malern oder Künstlern anderer Sparten folgen wollte, von denen Paul Doolan in seinem Buch spricht und die im Laufe der Geschichte von überall nach Zürich kamen. Wir sind also vom Hauptbahnhof der Bahnhofstrasse entlang gegangen und dann nach rechts in die Pelikanstrasse abgebogen, wo wir nach dem James Joyce Pub Ausschau hielten. Dieser authentische irische Pub aus dem 19. Jahrhundert wurde von einem reichen Schweizer Geschäftsmann und Fan des Künstlers nach Zürich transportiert. Als wir im Pub ankamen war er voll mit Geschäftsleuten, die das Mittagessen einnahmen, aber man konnte auch nur etwas trinken und fotografieren.

My husband and I have recently travelled to Zurich because I wanted to personally follow the track of James Joyce and the many other writers, musicians painters or artists of other disciplines, who in the course of history have come to Zurich. From the main station we walked along the Bahnhofstrasse and were on the lookout for the real Irish 19th century Juries Pub, which was bought by a wealthy Swiss businessman and transported from Ireland to Zurich on purpose for James Joyce. It is located in the Pelikanstrasse. When we arrived the Pub was full up with business people who were having lunch, but it was also possible to just have drinks and take pictures.

Ultimamente mio marito ed io siamo andati a Zurigo, perché volevo seguire le tracce di James Joyce e di tanti altri scrittori, musicisti, pittori e artisti di altre categorie, di cui parla Paul Doolan nel suo libro e che sono arrivati a Zurigo da tutte le parti del mondo nel corso della recente storia. Siamo quindi partiti dalla stazione principale andando lungo la “Bahnhofstrasse”. Ad un certo punto abbiamo preso la Pelikanstrasse che ci ha condotti direttamente al Pub di nome James Joyce. Questo Pub irlandese autentico del 19esimo secolo è stato trasportato a Zurigo da un uomo d’affari ricco della zona e sostenitore del famoso scrittore. Quando siamo arrivati al Pub, lo stesso è stato pieno di uomini d’affari incravatte. Malgrado ciò è stato possibile di avere solo da bere e ci è stato dato il permesso di fotografare.

KRONENHALLE

Auf unserer Entdeckungstour sind wir am Bellevue angekommen und, nachdem wir den herrlichen Ausblick auf den See genossen hatten, zur Rämistrasse, nicht weit von der Oper, weitergegangen, wo das wetberühmte Restaurant Kronenhalle ist. Wir haben uns da reingetraut und sind von der Atmosphere, die dort herrscht komplett überrascht und überwältigt geworden. Wir sassen in diesem vornehmen Lokal, umgeben von Bildern von Picasso, Mirò,Braque, Chagall, Varlin, Tinguely, Klee u.s.w. Bei Kaffee und Kuchen hat man uns lieberweise die Geschichte zu dieser Gaststätte erzählt, die ich hier kurz zusammenfassen werde.

On our discovering trip we’ve finally arrived in Bellevue and after having enjoyed a gorgeous view onto the lake of Zurich, we continued our walk to the Rämistrasse. The famous restaurant/café Kronenhalle is located on the Rämistrasse, not far from the Opera. We’ve dared to enter this house and were completely overwhelmed by the atmosphere. We were sitting in this elegant restaurant surrounded by paintings by Picasso, Braque, Chagall, Varlin, Tinguely, Klee, Mirò ecc. With coffee and cake we were being very kindly explained the story and history of this restaurant.

In occasione del nostro viaggio d’esplorazione siamo arrivati al Bellevue e dopo aver goduto la splendida vista sul lago di Zurigo abbiamo continuato verso la Rämistrasse, dove si trova il famosissimo ristorante/Café Kronenhalle, non lontano dall’Opera. Dopo aver vinto la nostra timidezza siamo entrati e rimasti sorpresi e affascinati di quello che abbiamo visto. Abbiamo quindi bevuto caffe e mangiato la torta di mela fatta in casa godendo i molti quadri originali appesi intorno a noi di Picasso, Mirò, Braque, Varlin, Tinguely, Klee ecc. La signorina ci ha gentilmente raccontato la storia della casa dandoci un libro con i dettagli.

Gottlieb und Hulda Zumsteg haben die Kronenhalle 1924 erstanden. Es war schon damals ein stattliches Haus, wo sich etwa Gottfried Keller, der berühmteste aller Zürcher Staatsschreiber, oder Arnold Böcklin, der grosse Schweizer Maler trafen.

Gutbürgerliche Küche und erlesene Weine wurden angeboten. Die Zumsteg übernahmen das Haus, obwohl es bereits längere Zeit geschlossen war und Frau Hulda war es gewohnt während vielen Jahren die Fussböden selbst zu schrubben und mit dem Koch einkaufen zu gehen, oder beim Metzger das  gute Fleisch selbst zu erkennen.

Gottlieb and Hulda Zumsteg bought the Kronenhalle in 1924. Already at that time Kronenhalle was a very good house, where, for example, Gottfried Keller, the most famous of the town clerks belonged to the guests or Arnold Böckli, the famous Swiss painter.

Plain cooking and special wines were offered. The family Zumsteg have taken over this house, despite the fact that it had been closed for quite a while. Mrs. Hulda Zumsteg was used for years to clean the floors on her knees, to go shopping with her cook and she was also able to recognize the best meat.

Già in quel periodo la Kronenhalle è stata un ottimo indirizzo. Gottfried Keller, il più famoso dei segretari comunali ed Arnold Böckli il famoso pittore svizzero erano fra gli ospiti della Kronenhalle. Cucina nostrana e vini speciali venivano offerti. La famiglia Zumsteg ha comprato questa casa anche se era stata chiusa per parecchio tempo. La signora Zumsteg ha pulito i pavimenti per anni sulle sue ginocchia, andava a far spesa con il cuoco e conosceva benissimo la carne da comprare.

Gustav, ein Sohn der Zumstegs hatte ein besonderes Gespür für den Seidenhandel, was ihn ins Ausland brachte. Dort lernte er das Ehepaar Guiguitte und Aimé Maeght kennen, zwei Galleristen, die ihm die Liebe zur Kunst und zur Küche beibrachten.

Die Kriegsjahre waren auch in der Schweiz und damit in der Kronenhalle schwierig. Frau Zumsteg, zeigte sich, wann immer möglich, grosszügig. Studenten bekamen über Mittag im oberen Stock eine Gratissuppe, in der viele saftige Würstchen schwammen. Die vielen Künstler aus allen Herren Ländern, die in der Schweiz Zuflucht gefunden haben, versammelten sich jeweils am Nachmittag in der Brasserie. Dann gab ihnen die Hausherrin, die Reste der Reichen. Frau Zumsteg mag damals nicht so viel von Kunst verstanden haben, aber von der harten Wirklichkeit des Lebens. So versammelten sich in der Kronenhalle, Willy Gugggenheim, genannt Varlin, Die Giacometti Brüder, der französische Bildhauer Germaine Richie usw.

Gustav, one of the Zumsteg sons had a particular flair for the silk business. For this reason he was frequently abroad. It was there that he met and came to know the couple Guiguitte and Aimé Maegh, two gallery owner, who introduced him into the art and the „cuisine“. The years of war were difficult also for Switzerland. Mrs Zumsteg was, whenever possible, generous. On the floor above students received, around lunchtime, a soup free of charge in which there were many sausages, whereas many artists from all over the world who found a save place in Switzerland usually met in the afternoon at Kronenhalle’s Brasserie. There they were given the left overs from the rich people by Mrs Zumsteg. At that time the hostess may not have understood too much about art, but a lot about the hard reality of life. So it was in that time that Willy Guggenheim, called Varlin, the Giacometti brothers, the French sculptor, Germaine Richie and so on and on, met at the Kronenhalle.

Gustav, uno dei figli Zumsteg, aveva proprio il fiuto per il commercio della seta ed era quindi spesso all’estero. Era in Francia quando conobbe i galleristi Guiguitte e Aimé Maeght che lo hanno introdotto sia nell’amore d’arte come in quella di cucina.

Gli anni di guerra erano difficili anche in Svizzera e per la Kronenhalle. La signora Zumsteg si è fatta generosa ogni qual volta era possibile. Sul mezzogiorno serviva agli studenti gratuitamente la minestra con buone salsicce . I tanti artisti provenienti da vari paesi di tutto il mondo si incontravano nella Kronenhalle il pomeriggio dove ricevevano i resti dei ricchi. La padrona magari non capiva allora tanto di arte, ma molto della realità della vita. Così presso questo ristorante si incontravano personaggi come Willi Guggenheim, chiamato Varlin, gli scultori e i fratelli Giacometti, oppure lo scultore francese, Germaine Richie ecc.

SILK/SEIDE/SETA

Nach dem Krieg stieg Gustav Zumsteg in der Hierarchie der Seidenfirma Abraham weiter auf. Die grössten Couturiers wollten vom Schweizer beraten und bedient werden. Er befreundete sich mit Cristobal Balenciaga, Christian Dior oder Coco Chanel, sowie Hubert Givenchy und besonders Yves Saint Laurent. Die Künstlerfreunde von Gustav, Marc Chagall und Joan Mirò besuchten nun das Restaurant oft. Max Frisch traf man hier und Friedrich Dürrenmatt feiert die gelungenen Premièren von „Der Besuch der alten Dame“ und „Die Physiker“. Die Kronenhalle ist zu einer Institution geworden und die Bar aus edelsten Materialien und einzigartig. Leider durften wir nicht fotografieren.

After the war Gustav Zumsteg climbed further  up the career ladder in the silk company Abraham. The most important fashion designers wanted to get advice from him and being served by Gustav. He had become a friend of Cristobal Balenciaga, Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and Hubert Givenchy and especially from Yves Saint Laurent.

His friends of art such as Marc Chagall, Joan Mirò frequently went to his restaurant in Zurich. There you could also meet Max Frisch or Friedrich Dürrenmatt, who even celebrated the successful opening nights of “The visit of the old lady” or “The Physicists”. The Kronenhalle has become an institution and its bar made of the most precious materials is unique. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take pictures.

Dopo la guerra Gustav Zumsteg è ulteriormente salito la scala nella ditta di seta, di nome Abraham. I creatori di moda più importanti volevano essere consigliati e serviti dallo svizzero. Era in amicizia sia con Cristobal Balenciaga, Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, nonché Hubet Givenchy e in modo particolare con Yves Saint Laurent.

I suoi amici d’arte, come Marc Chagall o Joan Mirò venivano spesso nel suo ristorante. Lì si potevano anche incontrare Max Frisch o Friederich Dürrenmatt. Quest’ultimo ha perfino celebrato le prime di ”La visita della vecchia signora” oppure “I fisici” La Kronenhalle è diventata un’istituzione e il suo bar, fatto di materiali più preziosi è fra i più sofisticati al mondo. Purtroppo non abbiamo potuto fare delle foto in questo luogo.

Das Café Odeon, im Jugendstil Gebäude, gegenüber der Kronenhalle, ist mit seiner langen Geschichte ist zusammen mit mit dem Cabaret Voltaire Wiege des DADAISMUS. Neben Hugo Ball, Emmy Hennings waren Künstler wie Hans Arp und Sophie Taeuber, Stefan Zweig, Frank Wedekind und Karl Kraus, Autor von “Die Fackel” Stammgäste, genauso wie William Somerset Maugham, der Autor von vielen Theaterstücken und Kurzgeschichten und Erich Maria Remarque, der die Anti-Kriegsgeschichte “Im Westen nichts Neues” schrieb. Da sind auch Kurt Tucholsky, Rowolhlt, Klaus Mand und Alfred Kerr zu erwähnen.Hugo Ball und Emmy Hennings sind auf dem Friedhof von Gentilino neben Hermann Hesse begraben.

The Café Odeon with its long history is another most famous meeting place and the cradle of DADAISM together with the Cabaret Voltaire. Besides Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennnings, there were artists such as Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber, Stefan Zweig, Frank Wedekind and Karl Kraus, author of “Torch”, as well as William Somerset Maugham, the author of plays and short stories, or Erich Maria Remarque, the writer of the anti-war novel “All Quiet on The Western Front” also belong to them. Then come Kurt Tucholsky, Rowohlt, Klaus Mann and Alfred Kerr. Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings are buried in Gentilino, Ticino, near Hermann Hesse.

Il Café Odeon, in stile Nouveau Art, si trova in faccia alla Kronenhalle ed ha pure una lunga storia ed è assieme al Cabaret Voltaire la culla del DADAISMO. Oltre a Hugo Ball e Emmy Hennings ci si incontravano importantissimi artisti, come Hans Arp e Sophie Taeuber, Stefan Zweig, Frank Wedekind e Karl Kraus, autore della „TORCIA“ o TORCH. Tra gli abitués c’erano pure William Somerset Maughan, scrittore di tanti pezzi teatrali e di storie brevi. Erich Maria Remarque che ha scritto il famoso romanzo „Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale“ si trovava regolarmente all’Odeon come pure Kurt Tucholsky, Rowohlt, Klaus Mand e Alfred Kerr. Hugo Ball ed Emmy Hennings sono al cimitero di Gentilino, vicino a Hermann Hesse.
