As I am frequently in Tegna, a small and special village in Ticino, I would like to present you one of the very famous American psychological thriller writers, who had lived there from approx. 1983 to her death in 1991. She died in Locarno of a kind of lung cancer and a memorial service was then held in the Catholic Church in Tegna, where her ashes were distributed in the columbarium.

I have read that she had stayed at the artist’s colony Yaddo, for some months, while she was writing her first book “ Strangers on a train” and it is to this foundation that she bequeathed her absolutely gorgeous mansion. Alfred Hitchcock launched Patricia Highsmith on a prolific career by turning the story of a tennis player and a psychopath, who meet in a train, where Bruno (the latter) proposes a “swap murder”, into a film.

Her stories are not about finding the murderer, but about the reasons of why he committed the crime! She was convinced that evil was a constitutive part of the human being! Patricia Highsmith seems to have written 22 novels and 8 short stories. Apart from her love for writing, she bred snails and loved cats much more then human beings! I have also read that once she was invited to a dinner party to which she brought a very big bag full up of snails and lettuce leaves to keep her company! She loved snail because they never changed and survived all kinds difficulties. She had many obsessions and was an alcoholic and smoked endlessly. Many years ago we wanted to invite her to our reading group but she wasn’t interested, of course.

The book I liked best was “THE PRICE OF SALT”, or CAROL. It is the story of two lesbian women in the USA and much more! I am adding you a video in which the first chapter is being read. By the way, the film with Cate Blanchett, which I have just recently seen, is great!!

Other famous people, such as Hanna Arendt, the German-American  political theoretician and publicist regularly stayed in Tegna from 1960-1970. At the end of this post I added a video regarding the film about her, the trial against Adolf Eichmann in Gerusalemme in 1961 and the banality of evil!

Harald  Szeemann, for example worked for decades out of a studio, which he referred to as “The Factory,” in the Swiss village Tegna, where he conceived international exhibitions and experimented with traditional museological practices.

Da ich häufig in Tegna, einem kleinen Dorf bei Locarno, bin, möchte ich euch eine der sehr berühmten und grossen amerikanischen Krimischriftstellerinnen vorstellen, die hier von ca. 1983 bis zu ihrem Tod an einer Art Lungenkrebs 1995 lebte. Sie starb zwar im Spital von Locarno, aber in der katholischen Kirche von Tegna wurde eine Abdankungsfeier abgehalten und ihre Asche dann in der dortigen Urnenhalle verstreut.

Ich habe gelesen, dass sie während 6 Monaten in der Künstlerkolonie Yaddo gelebt hat, als sie ihren ersten Roman “ Zwei Fremde im Zug” (1. deutsche Übersetzung hiess: Alibi für zwei) schrieb. Sie hat ihr wunderschönes Ansehen in Tegna dann auch dieser Stiftung vermacht. Alfred Hichcock machte aus dem psychologischen Krimi einen erfolgreichen Film und Patricia Highsmith wurde damit berühmt. Darin geht es um einen Tennisspieler und einen Psychopaten, die sich im Zug begegnen, wo Bruno, der zweite von beiden, einen „Tausch-Mord“ vorschlägt! Die Schriftstellerin war überzeugt, dass das Böse ein konstitutioneller Bestandteil der menschlichen Natur sei.Patricia Highsmith hat anscheinend 22 Romane und 8 Kurzgeschichten geschrieben und es ging ihr nicht darum den Mörder zu finden, sondern um die Motive, die jemanden zum Mörder machten.

Abgesehen vom Schreiben liebte sie Katzen und züchtete Schnecken. Sie liebte Tiere viel mehr als Menschen. Ich habe auch gelesen, dass sie mit einer riesigen Tasche zu einem Dinner erschien und darin Schnecken und Salat hatte, die ihr Gesellschaft leisten sollten. Sie züchtete die Schnecken auch und war ihnen so wohl gesinnt, weil sie sich nicht veränderten und auch die schwierigsten Situation überlebten. Sie hatte unzählige Obsessionen und war Alkoholikerin. Wir wollten sie einmal zu unserer “reading-group” einladen, aber natürlich war sie nicht daran interessiert

Andere berühmte Leute, sind Hannah Arendt, die deutsch-amerikanische politische Theoretikerin und Publizistin, die während der Jahre 1960-1970 regelmässig Ferien in Tegna machte, oder Hardold Szeemann, der hier wohnte und internationale Ausstellungen organisierte.

Am Ende dieses Beitrags habe ich ein Video zum Film “Hannah Arendt” von Margarethe Trotta beigefügt, in dem es speziell um den Prozess gegen Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem geht, den Anna Arendt für den New Yorker genaustens verfolgt hat und um die Banalität des Bösen.

Visto che sono spesso a Tegna, un piccolo villaggio a circa 7 minuti da Locarno, Ticino, Svizzera, vorrei presentarvi la famosa e grande scrittrice di gialli psicologici, Patricia Highsmith. La scrittrice ha vissuto in questa zona dal ca.1983 fino al 1995 quando è morta a Locarno a causa di una specie di cancro polmonare. Le eseque hanno avuto luogo nella chiesa catolica di Tegna e le sue ceneri sono state distribuite nel colombario.

Ho letto che Mr. Highsmith ha vissuto presso la colonia di artisti YADDO quando ha scritto il suo primo romanzo “Due stranieri in un treno” ed è a questa fondazione alla quale ha lasciato la sua stupenda proprietà. (Mi sembra però che la casa è stata trasformata parecchio.) Comunque, la storia di detto libro è di due persone – un tennista e un psicopatia di nome Bruno che si incontrano in un treno. Il secondo fa la proposto di effettuare un “assassino-scambio”, ossia Bruno avrebbe ucciso la moglie del tennista e il tennista il padre di Bruno! La scrittrice era convinta che il “MALE” era una parte costitutionale della natura umana.

Tempo fa ho anche scritto un post in merito al libro “The talented Mr. Ripley, anche di Patricia Highsmith e del film di Anton Minghella e gli attori Matt Damon, Gweneth Paltrow, Jude Law e Cate Blanchet.

Sembra che la scrittrice ha scritto 22 romanzi e 8 storie brevi e non le era importante di trovare l’assassino, ma Patricia era interessata nei loro motivi! A parte dell’amore di scrivere, amava i gatti e tirava su lumache, perché questi animali sopravvivono la fame e non hanno cambiato nel corso degli anni. Le lumache non sono ambivalenti! Una volta era invitata per una cena e ha portato una grandissima borsa, nella quale aveva lattuga e lumache per tenerle compagnia. Ella aveva diverse ossessioni ed era un’ubriacona e fumava tantissimo.

Il libro che mi è piaciuto di più: IL PREZZO DEL SALE. La storia è di due donne lesbiche negli Stati Uniti degli anni cinquanta.

La filosofa politica tedesca-americana-ebrea ha regolarmente passato le sue vacanze a Tegna tra il 1960-1970. Qui di sotto ho messo il discorso finale nel quale Hanna Arendt spiega da umana ebrea “La Banalità del Male” in cosa consiste (scena tratta dal film Anna Arendt di Margarethe von Trotta) Nel 1961 Hanna Arendt si era recatta a Gerusalemme per asistere al processo contro il mediocro funzionario nazista Adolf Eichmann. Nel film è la convincente attrice Barbara Sukova ad interpretare Hannah Arendt.

Patricia Highsmith would have been 100 years today, 19th January 2021! It seems that her leggendary diaries will soon be published!
